Morelia,October 25th. Puebla and Queretaro had all ready received the Finnish Harri Rovanpera as the winner, now it was Morelia who watched him as absolut leader of the twenty third edition of the Carrera Panamericana.
As in his better days, the former pilot of the World Rally Championship made an almost perfect journey. If during the first stage, he showed cautious immediately the push the throttle to win the second, third and fourth stages, showing the best of his experience behind the wheel and keeping away from the problems that the Panamericana has to the pilots. Driving the Studebaker number 140 registered in the Turismo Mayor category. Rovanpera started the journey at the Josefa Ortiz de Dominguez theater in Queretaro, maintaining a close fight with the Mexican Michel Jourdain, however this Monday he was able to increase his advantage after arriving first at the finish installed at one side of the Morelia Cathedral.
Navigated by his compatriot Jouni Narhi, the Finnish solved the six staged of speed disputed today and passed with honors one of the maximum trials in the Panamericana as is Mil Cumbres, near the city of Morelia in where two chronographed stages took place.
“It was a great day for us, it was my first time in Mil Cumbres. If you know how to run it you can do it very fast. It is really pleasant to cover this stage” Rovanpera expressed.
Mean while, Michel Jourdain is not willing to give up in his Studebaker number 131, navigated by Miguel Diez. Once more, he arrived just behind Rovanpera keeping a short distance, aproximatly one minute is the difference between the two in the general, and keeps waiting for a mistake of Harri that may open him the door towards a victory. Also it was a great day for the American Doug Mockett and the Mexican Angelica Fuentes, finishing third driving an Oldsmobile, also in the Turismo Mayor category recovering positions after a mistake during the first stage.
After spending the night in Morelia, the Panamericana caravan will leave at 8:00 hrs from the main square to fight for the triumph in the fifth stage that will lead them to Plaza Andares in Guadalajara where they should be arriving around de 15:50 hours. This Tuesday the hundred crews will race over 494.18 kilometers, from which 42.18 will be pure speed divided in five sections, one of those to start the journey in the Lagunillas speed way. Even the fourth stage is the shortest in speed kilometers, it is one of the nicest since it will go to the Lago de Pátzcuaro, next to the cities of Tzintzuntzán, Quiroga y Zacapu. After the service in La barca, Jalisco,it will continue its way to Jiquilpan and the imponent zone of Mazamitla. And then arriving for the night to Guadalajara.
