Carrera Panamericana 2010: Day 5 - Guadalajara to Aguascalientes

Guadalajara, October 26th. It seems that there’s nothing or no one capable of stopping the winning track of Harri Rovanpera, the finnish pilot, towards Zacatecas. This was his fourth time in a row arriving first right after completing the fifth stage of the Panamericana, which took place from Morelia to Guadalajara.

Once again the former pilot of the world rally championship, teamed by his compatriot Jouni Narhi, got to the front of the group of survivors formed by more than 90 teams, and gave one more step to the title, in just his first participation in the prestigious classic car race.

“During the morning I was after a lost in the traffic car, that made me lose a lot of time, but I learnt to avoid damaged roads and got an advantage. I had some mechanical problems but getting to the service (in La Barca) I could solve it and ended very well the noon”, explained Rovanpera.

Now that the Panamericana 2010 has grown up, Harri and his Studebaker number 140 seem to be first in line through the Zacatecas capital, furthermore they are far from celebrating the victory, considering that the Mexican team conformed by Michel Jourdain and Miguel Díez are very close considering the total times in the Studebaker 131.

However, today wasn’t Michael’s turn to arrive after Rovanpera, the cause was an unfortunate penalization, this time the chance was for the Oldsmobile of the American Doug Mockett and the Mexican Angélica Fuentes, who stayed with the second position taking advantage of the five minute penalization over Carlos Anaya and Javier Marín, driving a LT Special.

The third absolut position was for the brothers Alejandro and Mauricio Pimentel, driving the Dodge from Farmacias Gl, who have been arranging the way after an unfortunate first stage, but they have known how to recover in order to get up in the general positions.

This Tuesday’s stage started at 8:00 hours from the center of Morelia to the Plaza Andares in the “perla tapatía”, where they arrived after a total trip of 494.180 kilometers, from which only 42.180 were timed.

The spectacular accident from the stage was the one from the American Bill Beilharz, champion in 2008, who lost control of the Studebaker number 108 in the speed track between Cucurucho and Tzintzuntzán, the second of the stage. Even though it flew at least 50 meters, he was uninjured and without consequences to regret of.

This Wednesday the multicolor panamerican caravan will start his way at the 10:00 hours from the Plaza Andares, to finish in Aguascalientes, to cover a sixth stage of the prestigious classic car race, a stage that is going to have 381.250 kilometers from which 60.160 are going to be speed tracks.
